چکیده

Waste generation has increased considerably worldwide in the last few decades. Solid wastes encompass the heterogeneous mass of throwaways from the urban community as well as the homogeneous accumulations of agricultural, industrial and mineral wastes. Waste generated from biomedical activities represents a real problem of living nature and human world. A proper waste management system should be required to dispose hazardous biomedical waste and incineration should be the best available technology to reduce the volume of this hazardous waste. The incineration process destroys pathogens and reduces the waste volume and weight but leaves a solid material called biomedical waste incineration ash as residue which increases the levels of heavy metals, inorganic salts and organic compounds in the environment. Disposal of biomedical waste ash in landfill without proper treatment may cause contamination of groundwater due to leachate as metals are not destroyed during incineration. The limited space and the high cost for land disposal led to the development of recycling technologies and the reuse of ash in different systems. In order to minimize leaching of its hazardous components into the environment several studies confirmed the successful utilization of biomedical waste ash in agriculture and as structural and constructional material. This paper presents the overview of some of the research published on the beneficial use of ash in agriculture and construction materials and its leachate characteristics. This review also stressed on the need to further evaluate other suitable ways of disposing and utilizing the ashes and slag generated from biomedical waste incinerators.

Solubility and adsorption characteristics of Pb in leachate from MSW incinerator bottom ash.

The solubility and adsorption characteristics of Pb in leachate from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash was studied by batch experiments. The solubility of Pb in leachate was 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than that of Pb in carbonate solutions. Adsorption experiments showed bottom ash have high adsorption capacity for Pb. To evaluate a controlling component in bottom ash, quar...

Properties of lightweight aggregate produced by rapid sintering of incinerator bottom ash

The fraction of municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash with a particle size less than 8mm has been milled, formed into pellets and rapidly sintered in a rotary furnace at temperatures between 900 and 1080 ◦C. The effect of sintering temperature on density, water absorption and crushing strength has been determined. Sintering at temperatures between 1000 and 1050 ◦C produces pellets with p...

Environmental Management of Fly Ash Produced from the Incineration of Municipal Solid Waste

Incineration is a widely used and well established technology for the municipal solid waste (MSW) management. Modern MSW incineration plants are equipped with improved air pollution control (APC) systems, which reduce pollutants well below the established limits. The environmental concern has, thus, moved from the air emissions to the solid residues generated from the APC systems of the inciner...

The potential of recycling and reusing municipal solid waste incinerator ash in Taiwan.

By 2004, there were 19 municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) with a total yearly treatment capacity of 7.72 million tons in service in Taiwan. All 19 incinerators operated daily to generate about 1.05 million tons of incinerator ash, including bottom ash and stabilized fly ash in 2003, and the average ash yield is 18.67%. The total number of incinerators is expected to increase to 27, servi...

Impact of MSWI Bottom Ash Codisposed with MSW on Landfill Stabilization with Different Operational Modes

The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash (BA) codisposed with municipal solid waste (MSW) on landfill stabilization according to the leachate quality in terms of organic matter and nitrogen contents. Six simulated landfills, that is, three conventional and three recirculated, were employed with different ratios of MSWI BA to MSW. ...
